Queenstown is New Zealand's premier ski destination and the hub for winter activity across the South Island. With access to four ski fields within driving distance, a well-established apres ski scene, and some of the most dramatic alpine scenery in the Southern Hemisphere, it draws skiers and snowboarders from across New Zealand and around the world each winter season.
The season typically runs from late June through to late October, with peak conditions generally in July and August. Snowfall varies year to year but all four fields have snowmaking capability to supplement natural snow.
The closest ski field to Queenstown at around 30 minutes by car or ski bus, Coronet Peak is the most consistently skiable field in the region. It operates the only night skiing in New Zealand, running Friday and Saturday evenings during the peak season, which makes for a genuinely memorable experience with the lights of Queenstown visible below.
The terrain suits intermediate to advanced skiers well, with a good mix of groomed runs and off-piste options. Beginners are catered for with dedicated learning areas and ski school. The base lodge facilities are well developed with food, rental, and storage all available on site.

Around 40 minutes from Queenstown, The Remarkables sits in a dramatic natural bowl surrounded by the peaks that give the field its name. The setting is more raw and alpine than Coronet Peak and the terrain is well suited to all levels, with a strong beginner and intermediate offering alongside more challenging runs higher up.
The drive up to The Remarkables is part of the experience, with the road climbing steeply from the valley floor with views across Lake Wakatipu that are difficult to match anywhere in New Zealand.
Around 90 minutes from Queenstown near Wanaka, Cardrona is one of New Zealand's most popular ski fields and consistently regarded as one of the best for families and beginner to intermediate skiers. The terrain is well laid out, the facilities are excellent, and the historic Cardrona Hotel at the base of the access road is one of the most photographed buildings in the South Island.
The largest ski area in the South Island by skiable terrain, Treble Cone sits above Lake Wanaka around 90 minutes from Queenstown. It is best suited to intermediate and advanced skiers, with steep terrain, long runs, and reliably good snow. Less crowded than Coronet Peak or Cardrona on busy weekends.

By ski bus - Queenstown operates a well-run ski bus service to both Coronet Peak and The Remarkables during the season. Buses depart from central Queenstown and are a convenient option if you prefer not to drive on alpine roads in winter conditions. Booking in advance during peak periods is recommended.
By car - All four fields are accessible by car. A four-wheel drive or winter tyres plus chains are required for The Remarkables road in icy conditions. Coronet Peak road is more straightforward but chains should always be carried during the season.
Both Coronet Peak and The Remarkables are operated by NZSki. Multi-day passes covering both fields offer good value and can be purchased online in advance. Booking lift passes, ski hire, and lessons before you travel is strongly recommended during the July school holiday period when both fields are at their busiest.
Queenstown's apres ski scene is centred around The Mall and the Steamer Wharf area. Most of the bars along the waterfront fill up naturally in the early evening as the ski buses return to town.
